About the NUW
NUW Rules as at 11 November 2019 (Word)
Financial year: 1 July to 30 June
Date of registration: 1 October 1912, originally as the Federated Storemen and Packers Union of Australia
Date of deregistration: 11 November 2019
An amalgamation with the Federated Rubber Workers Union of Australia in 1988 resulted in the organisation being known as the National Union of Workers. Four subsequent amalgamations with other employee organisations occurred in the early 1990s.
The union represented employees in a range of industries and occupations, including:
- warehousing and distribution
- storing and packing of goods and merchandise
- food manufacturing
- rubber, plastic and cable-making
- dairy and cold storage
- poultry, fish and game processing
- wool broking
- oil
- pet food
- fast moving consumable goods
- pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution, and
- market research, sales and marketing.
The organisation had a branch in New South Wales, one in Victoria, and a third branch known as the General Branch, which covered the remaining membership of the organisation throughout Australia as well as membership in specified occupational groupings.
The branches of the organisation were reporting units for the purposes of financial reporting; however, the General Branch has a reporting exemption under section 245 of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 (financial reporting on an alternative basis). The National Office lodged financial reports that covered both the National Office and the General Branch.
The organisation was governed by a National Council consisting of the National Office Bearers and Delegates from the branches. The organisation was also governed by a National Committee of Management. The governance, management and control of the affairs of each branch were vested in the respective Branch Committees of Management.
Elections across the organisation were conducted every 4 years. These elections were conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission.
